The Enquirer has finished providing live updates of the 2011 Singapore General Elections results since 10pm yesterday on Twitter, Facebook and on this website. As at 5pm, 1,845,290 out of 2,211,102 eligible voters (83.46%) cast their votes in the most hotly-contested General Elections since Independence.
While the ruling People’s Action Party was returned to power yesterday with 81 out of 87 seats in Parliament, the overall vote share slipped from 66.6% in 2006 to 60.14%. This is lower than the historic low of 61% seen in 1991.
The Worker’s Party was the biggest winner in the opposition camp. Other than securing the Hougang seat, its ‘A’ team led by secretary-general Low Thia Khiang won Aljunied GRC with 54.71% of the votes cast, a first since GRCs were introduced in 1988. Two PAP ministers, George Yeo and Lim Hwee Hua, were knocked out.
Its candidates in Joo Chiat and East Coast GRC were the nation’s best performing losers along with Singapore People’s Party’s Lina Chiam, who lost Potong Pasir SMC by a razor-thin margin of 0.72%, and can be elected as Non-Constituency Members of Parliament (NCMP).
Other parties, however, were not as successful. Veteran opposition leader Chiam See Tong’s venture into Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC with his SPP team only garnered 43.06% of the votes, while the National Solidarity Party (NSP), the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) and the Reform Party (RP) went home empty despite putting their best teams together.
We present an overview of the General Elections 2011 results.
