Actually this problem probably arises from the tortured and meandering way the article is structured.

One point, though… it’s a bit weird that Junjie, who is the Editor-in-Chief of the Nanyang Chronicle, writes in this article: “At the protest, conspicuously absent were members of the current editorial team at the campus newspaper and broadcast media, the Nanyang Chronicle and Nanyang Spectrum.” So the current editor of the campus newspaper is pointing out that the current editorial team was absent at the event? How? If he was not there, how could he write a proper report on the event? And if he was there, why did he not speak? It’s like time travel, or looking at one of those pictures with a man looking at a picture of himself looking at a picture of himself – very confusing.

Normally, if the writer of a piece has a vested interest in the story, he/she should declare it in the interests of journalistic integrity (and I accept that journalistic integrity is, shall we say, flexible!).

I hope this does not sound like sour grapes from the Chron seeing a new rival looking so good. But the casual reader may not know about the conflicting interests here.
